Query #347 – Want info on parents of Mary (Hull) Bell, b. 1813, OH; d. 1852, Starke Co., IN; m. Israel Coleman Bell, Marion Co., OH: Wish to have information on the parents of Mary Hull, b. 1813 in Ohio (prob. Marion County); d. 1852 in Starke County, Indiana. She married Israel Coleman Bell in Marion County, Ohio, in 1833. Per a biography of one of her sons, Mary’s father was Jesse Hull, a Revolutionary War veteran.

— Submitted 06 Dec 2013 by non-member Stephen A. Barneby

  • 06 Dec 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: We do not believe that Jesse Hull was a Revolutionary War veteran. The only Jesse Hull in our records who served in the Revolutionary War was from CT. His daughter Mary Ann did not marry Israel Coleman Bell. In order to help with this family, we would need to have more information. Where was this biography found? We might have more info if we knew more about the biography and its location.

Query #346 – Samuel Hull, b. ca. 1778, Danbury, Fairfield Co., Connecticut. Wakeman Hull, b. 1807, d. 1869: I would like to know if anyone has found a will for Samuel Hull, b. ca. 1778, in Danbury, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, son of Wakeman Hull, b. btwn 1755–1758 son of Stephen Hull. I am trying to connect my Wakeman Hull, b. 1807, d. 1869, with Samuel Hull.

— Submitted 25 Sep 2013 by Donna L. Bowman, HFA Member #1816

  • 25 Sep 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: First we do not believe that Samuel Hull, b. ca. 1778, was the son of Wakeman Hull, as given in The Hull Family in America, published 1913.
Secondly, we are familiar with your Wakeman Hull, b. ca. 1807, but we do not have his parent’s names, even though we have worked on this issue before.
We have 11 different Samuel Hulls who lived in Fairfield Co., CT. We have 13 different Wakeman Hulls in our database, including 5 who lived in Fairfield Co., CT. We have no proof that your Wakeman Hull ever lived in CT. Supposedly he was born in NY.
We have only one Samuel Hull who left a will in CT. That was in 1720. He’s much too old to be the Samuel you are looking for. We have one other Samuel Hull in our database who had a son Wakeman. This Samuel Hull was b. ca. 1782, with a son Wakeman, but we do not believe that this Samuel was the son Wakeman Hull, b. btwn. 1755–1758, and proofs are lacking for this family. Apparently this family did live in Fairfield Co., CT but not in NY.
The locations that we are showing for your Wakeman Hull are in NYC, NY; New Rochelle, Westchester Co., NY; and Long Branch Co., Nassau, NY. We find him age 50 and born in NY in the 1860 Westchester Co., NY census with a wife Eliza [_?_]. We need to find your Wakeman Hull in the 1850 census. If you have that info, we could hopefully make some progress with this line.

Query #345 – Documentation connecting my Joseph Hull to parents Elijah Hull and Sarah Hulse: Need documentation acceptable to the Daughters of the American Revolution that connects my Joseph Hull to his parents—Elijah Hull and Sarah Hulse.

— Submitted 24 Sep 2013 by prospective member Christa G. Hobson

  • 24 Sep 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Unfortunately, all generations below are incorrect for your Joseph Hull, b. ca. 1799 or 1798, PA; m. 29 Jun 1820, Wayne Co., OH; d. 09 Sep 1875, Elkhart, Elkhart Co., IN; m. Catherine Piles or Pyles. He was not the son of Elijah Hull and Sarah Hulse.
Joseph, the son of Elijah Hull and Sarah Hulse, was born 09 Mar 1797; m. 19 Aug 1818, Clermont Co., OH, to Nancy Garfield, and he died 02 Jun 1853. This Joseph never lived in Lancaster Co., PA, Wayne Co., OH, or Elkhart Co., IN. Instead he lived in Mercer Co., PA, and Clark and Logan Cos., OH. This is in my Notes for Joseph Hull, the son of Elijah Hull and Sarah Hulse: No apparent children. Joseph Hull’s brothers & sisters inherited his estate. We do not have the parents of this Joseph Hull who m. Catherine Piles, but do know that he was not the son of Elijah Hull and Sarah Hulse. That was a completely different Joseph Hull.

Query #344 – Seeking info on my 6 Gt Grand-parent Elizabeth Hull, d. 26 Nov. 1760, m. Stephen Burr: Buried where?

— Submitted 24 Sep 2013
by Douglass Mather Mabee, HFA Member #1814

  • 23 Jul 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: HFA Member #0000 Robert E. Hull in his updated book on the descendants of George Hull, the immigrant, gives this information: Elizabeth died in Redding, Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT, on 26 Nov 1760; she was 61.3,90 Ref Number: 63. Reference Number 63 is: {BWD} The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong… by Benjamin W. Dwight. He also cites No. 3: {FOF} Families of Old Fairfield [Connecticut] by Donald Lines Jacobus and No. 90: {HOR1} History of Redding [Connecticut], Book I, by Charles Burr Todd.
If Elizabeth (Hull) Burr died in Redding, Fairfield County, Connecticut, she was probably buried there. Jacobus gives no burial place for her and Find A Grave does not give conclusive proof on where she was buried either. It may be that her gravestone, if there was one, is no longer visible.

  • 19 Sep 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Since you have now joined the HFA, we have completed your Hull lineage back to and beyond the immigrant, George Hull, in Crewkerne, co.  Query #342 – Request info on Peter Thomas Hull: My name is Terry L. Smales and I believe that I am related to a Hull. Peter Thomas Hull came from Germany with two sons. He then married a Susanna Margaretha Dieffenbach and had more children, one of which was George Hull who married a Hannah Keister. George is a Patriot and I think that his father Peter is as well. Can you help with any of this??

— Submitted 25 Jul 2013 by non-member Terry L. Smales

  • 25 Jul 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Yes, we can certainly help with this line. We have published several detailed articles on Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull, while correcting in these articles some of the incorrect info out on the Internet and in other publications. For instance, there is no evidence at all that Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull came here with two sons. We also have very good proof for who his sons actually were. If you are a member of the Hull Family Association, you can obtain our articles on Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull. We’d enjoy helping you with this family. I also published a book in 1997 on the Hulls/Hohls/Holls who served in the Revolutionary War. My book is sold out, but if you are a member, I can send you by e-mail entries out of my book on the relevant people in this family who served.

Query #340 – Seeking info on my Hulls in Lacy & Des Moines, Iowa: Brothers Lynn Wilber, Clair and Hershel Hull: I am Lynn Wade, son of Phyllis Hull, daughter to Lynn Wilber Hull, born in Lacy Iowa. Lynn Hull had two older brothers, Clair and Hershel Hull. Their father, was a dairy farmer and Quaker minister in the city of Lacy and Des Moines Iowa. I also know that their families came to Lynn Mass in the late 1500. From Belgium after they were forced out of England in 1542. I know this may be a shot in the dark, but it would be fun to see if there is more information about the Hull family.

  • 24 Jul 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Normally we do not have the time to research lines in our possession unless one is a member of the Hull Family Association. That’s because all of our time is spent helping our members, which we are able to do in many, many cases. Therefore we’d like to have you to join us. We are non-profit, have over 450 members, and have been going strong since 1985. And we strongly believe in documenting all of our data.
It would take some very intensive research to find the intervening generations back to the late 1500s from your present-day Hulls. However, no Hulls were here by those dates. The first European-British people here did not come until the early 1600s, unless one is speaking of Florida. We do have info on several other very early immigrants, however, to MA. Your ancestor may be among those. We specialize in advising our members of what we know is true and what is not true about their ancestors, since we have been doing this work for a very long time. I do know, however, that the parents of your Lynn Wilber, Clair, and Hershel Hull were… [answer to this query is available only to HFA members; become a member here].

  • 23 Jul 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: We are showing that your grandfather was born in Candor, Tioga Co., NY. This info seems to have come from close family relatives. However, we do suggest that you try to get either a death certificate or a marriage certificate for your grandfather, as these often contain the birthplaces of the people who are marrying or the person who has died.
Since you posted this query, you have told me that you find in your possessions an obituary for your grandfather, giving his birthplace as Candor, NY.

Query #328 – Boone Co., IA Hulls; seeking true facts: Several websites list Henry Wilton Hull, b. 8 Aug 1848, as the first white child born in Boone Co., IA. I understand that websites are often wrong on these things though. There was also a rumor that some genealogy research was done many years ago and a newspaper article was found disputing this.
The article claimed his mother (Sophia Holcomb, b. 5 Nov 1827, Fulton Co., IL) was Indian. There are also several people in the family who have said this is true and who were children when she was alive and knew her. However, all of these people have passed on at this point. I am wondering if there is any evidence for this or if you have any suggestions on further research.

  • 15 Mar 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: I have studied the Boone Co., IA Hulls in great detail, as my Hull line is related to them. Very often family stories are wrong. I would seriously doubt that Henry Wilton Hull was the first white child born in Boone Co., IA. Boone Co. was formed in 1846. That’s two years before the birth of Henry Wilton Hull. Surely there were other white children born in Boone Co. before Henry Wilton Hull. As for Sophia (Holcomb) Hull being Indian; this is a very common fable in many, many families, to the point where this is now an “urban legend.” Please see this article on “Family Legends and Myths.” These include “The Cherokee Indian Princess Myth,” “The Three Brothers Myth,” “The Stowaway Myth,” “The Claim-to-Fame Myth,” and several others. These stories are common in almost every family—not just with the Hulls.

Query #324 – Lt. Col. Willis D. Hull (Ret.); Portland, Chautauqua Co., NY: My maternal grandmother, Ellen Elizabeth Perry, married Willis in December 1968 in De Hague, Netherlands. He passed away in 1982 (in his middle 80s). When my grandmother passed away in 1984 my mother shipped her belongings to Washington state.
In the process of sorting my mother’s estate I have found many, many pictures of Willis’s Hull family, dating I am sure to the 1800s. In addition I think one of his sisters married a McGrath. I have some letters between them from WWI.
Please let me know if you would like these items.
Willis attended Columbia University. I think he was born and raised in Portland, NY, living on the family farm on the shores of Lake Erie. I think his father was one of the original settlers of Portland. I believe he is buried in Portland, NY. I hope he is part of your website’s family. I do apologize for the sketchiness of the information. I do hope it is enough to find him in your records.

Query #321 – Desire info on War of 1812 service for George Hull of Licking Co., OH and Boone Co., IA, who m. #2 Mrs. Lucy (Ferris/Farris) Roberts: Does anyone have info on the War of 1812 service for my ancestor, George Hull who m. #2 Mrs. Lucy (Ferris/Farris) Roberts? The cemetery records in Boone Co., IA, where my George Hull was buried, indicate that George was a Lt. in the War of 1812. The grave is marked with a War of 1812 stake. Family info states that Lucy Ferris was the daughter of George Hull’s commanding officer in the War of 1812. Is this true?

  • 06 Mar 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: The Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812, published in 1916 by the Ohio Adjutant General’s Office, shows on p. 29 a Lieut. George Hull who served in Capt. John Bartholomew’s Co. from Jul 31 until Sep 5, 1813. No county is given but he is serving with other Hulls who appear to all be from Licking Co., OH.
On p. 104, Lieut. George Hull also appeared in Capt. James Rightmire’s Co. from May 4 until May 19, 1813 and from Sep 8, 1814 to Mar 5, 1815. This list states that the company is probably from Licking Co. and this Lt. George Hull is thought to have been the same person as above.
The listing from the National Archives gives a Lt. George Hull serving in the 1st Regiment of Williamson’s Ohio Militia. He may also be identical to the above two George Hulls.
I am not seeing a commanding officer named Ferris or Farris in any of these lists in which George Hull served. Your George Hull evidently married on 29 May 1836, Mrs. Lucy (Ferris) Roberts. They married in Fulton Co., IL where several other Hulls from this branch also settled. It does not make sense that George Hull would have married the daughter of his commanding officer in the War of 1812 when his marriage to this woman did not take place in Ohio and it happened twenty-one years after the War of 1812 ended. As so often happens, I believe that your family information is not true.
I did a search for the Ferris and Farris names in the above book and only a Capt. John Ferris (p. 59) appeared, but not in the same county as George Hull. Nor were any other names in the Capt. Ferris’s company Hull, or their associates. There are 157 pages in this book.

Query #320 – First Wife of German Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull: Desire information on Peter Thomas Hull’s first wife, if you please.

  • 05 Mar 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: No information exists on the first wife of Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull, but we have a lot of additional info on PTH and who his rightful children were. I’ve written articles on this. Several of his children who appear on the Internet etc., and in some published records, were not his children.
I’ve been studying the life of PTH for over twenty years. Our HFA Journals with updated information on the Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull line are still available.
