Query #317 – Seeking info on great grandmother Marie Margaret (Hull) Pitts; mother Mary Rhodes; who is the Hull father? Do you have any contacts from researchers doing research on the half-siblings of Marie Margaret Hull? The half-siblings were Daniel Powers and Mamie Powers. All three list Mary Rhodes as their mother on the military and marriage documents I found online. Mamie Powers was living in Ohio, then lived in Tennessee, before she a married a widower named Richard S. Mandeville in Montana. Richard Mandeville had two daughters who were married with families—one married a Walsh and the other married a White. Daniel Powers lived in Tennessee and married [_?_] White and they had a child die and divorced; then Daniel Powers joined the Army and named Mamie (Powers) Mandeville as next of kin on his military paperwork.

I met the Mandevilles in 1959 when they came to our home and transported my mother to the funeral of Marie Margaret (Hull) Pitts. Marie was my mother’s grandmother and half-sister of Mamie (Powers) Mandeville. It would be interesting to locate photos, find out from extended family about Marie Margaret Hull and who her parents were.

  • 23 Feb 2016 Reply from non-member Pamela Gene Wethered-McClung: Additional research reveals that: Mary (Rhodes) Hull, daughter of Peter Rote/Rhodes of Bavaria, Germany, in PA, 1860 census. Mary (Rhodes) born 1858, PA; died Jun 1905, Boise, Ada Co., ID. Buried there in Morris Hill Cemetery. Her older sister, Margaret (Rhodes) Wentworth married Menzo Radley Wentworth; both buried Morris Hill Cemetery, Ada Co., ID. Believe Margaret and Mary Rhodes had brother in Green, Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH, census 1870, 1880.
Found Daniel Powers in 1910 Maple Grove, Ada Co., ID, census; then found his WWI draft registration done at Shoshone, Lincoln Co., ID in 1917. Place and year where his 1/2 sister, Marie Margaret Hull, married Richard Alexander Pitts. Daniel Powers’ military records reveal he registered in the Army in 1918 from Jonesboro, Washington Co., TN, and had health complications, was discharged, then received disability benefit. Believe he married C. MacDougal and divorced; later in TN married to Blanche Beard and doing WPA work; then divorced. Think he is buried at Morris Hill Cemetery, Ada Co., ID. Daniel Powers’ sister and brother in law, Mamie (Powers) Mandeville and Richard Skylar Mandeville, were buried at American Legion Cemetery at Granite Falls, Snohomish Co., WA. Mamie’s stone says Mary Mandeville, d. 1961. The truth is out there. Who was Mr. Hull?

Query #316 – Richard Savillian Hull, New Haven Co., CT: I am the granddaughter of William Henry Hull of New Haven, CT (son of Richard Savillian Hull, also of New Haven). I am just getting started in the process. We have a copy of the early 1900s book—my uncle, Frank Goetz Hull, annotated it, so that it is easier to trace the generations.

I would love to know if any of Richard Savillian’s siblings had children. I remember hearing of Uncle Byron. Not sure what else at this point. I am new to this.

I cannot promise that we have the info you want until I begin to do research on this, but I did a little checking. Yes, there were some descendants from one of Richard Savillian’s brothers.

— Submitted 26 Dec 2012 by Wanda Clark, HFA Member #1784

  • 26 Dec 2012 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: We think you are talking about the Samuel Hull who was born 05 Nov, 1703, probably in Middlesex Co., NJ. He died after 06 Jul 1761 and was of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ. This is a problem lineage in the Rev. Joseph Hull, immigrant, line because it’s not certain if Samuel was the son of the Samuel Hull who married Mary Manning (the son of the Rev. Joseph Hull, 1635, immigrant), or the son of the older son, Samuel Hull, son of Samuel Hull and Mary Manning, who was born 20 Jul 1678. Since you are now a member of the HFA and have filled out a lineage form, we will be discussing your ancestry with you over the next few months, and we will point out what we do know and what we do not yet know about this troublesome lineage.

He is buried in the Harveytown (formerly Hull) Cemetery in Huntington, Cabell County, WV. I have a picture of this headstone if anyone is interested, and will send it to those that request it (from the HFA Webmaster).
  • 23 Jul 2012 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Yes, we have Hiram Dunsmoor Hull in our database. We know that he was in Cabell Co., WV, but we do not have him located in NH. We think that might be an error. We also do not have a solid death date for him, but think he died before the 1850 census. We have possible parents for this Hiram which would carry the line back to the immigrant. If you are an HFA member, this information will be made available to you, and you can order our family group sheets, three at a time, if you request these. • 23 Jul 2012 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: I have worked several hours on your query and presently I can tell you this: From the Hocker-McCormack-Hull-Sproul Genealogy, comp. 1958, by Dr. Roy Hull McCormack, pp. 192–193, 254–5: This genealogy of people descending from Philip Holl and Elizabeth Barbara Lingenfelter mentions Napoleon Hull and they call him “ Uncle Napoleon,” as per letter from Rodney C. Reid, of Alleghany Vista Farm, Route 1, Box 291, Staunton, VA, to Dr. Roy Hull McCormack, Manhattan, Kansas, 20 Jul 1957.
Mr. Reid says this: “Papa used to talk a lot of ‘Uncle Napoleon Hull,’ and I used to have his picture—the only one in existence everybody said.” On Nov 25 1957, Mr. Reid wrote: “Can’t find too much about Napoleon Hull. He substituted for John Dice in the War and Mr. Dice paid him a little. He was a handsome man from the picture I once had of him, given me by Mrs. Dr. Sam Hileman, and she was the daughter of Bill Foutz. … Napoleon Hull was a first cousin of John McKey Hull.”
Our first recommendation is that you participate in the Hull DNA Study. This should verify if you are connected to the above line. Then we recommend that you look at both probate and land records in Rockbridge Co., VA, and especially for any records pertaining to the above Philip Holl and his son Peter Holl/Hull who married Jane “Jenney” Dickey. We surely think that your Napoleon Hull must connect to this line, but DNA would confirm this.
One of our HFA members, Dr. Michael Hull, has kindly sent us the obituary of Napoleon Hull, but it does not reveal his parents’ names, unfortunately.

  • 20 Jun 2012 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: First, this Peter Hull was never known as Peter Thomas Hull, even though that was his father’s name. But there is no official record at all of this man having a middle name. We have no solid or verified birth date, nor birth place, nor marriage date for this Peter Hull, so those entries should remain blank. We do, however, have a lot of information on this man and I can send you his family group sheet since you are an HFA member. — Submitted 20 Jun 2012 by Carolyn Hoffman, HFA member #1776

  • 20 Jun 2012 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Your Sarah Hull appears to be the granddaughter of the Rev. Joseph Hull, 1635 immigrant to New England. Her father was Capt. Tristram Hull, who married Blanche [_?_].We need to look further at original records to confirm this Allen-Hull marriage, but several secondary sources do show this.
Your second question can be answered by a simple statement. These Hulls were in no way related to Cordell Hull, the Secretary of State under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. DNA analysis proves this, in addition to many documented paper records.

Query #296 – Seeking parents of Ebenezer Hull (1810–1911); Guilford and Forsyth Cos., NC: My g-grandmother was Elizabeth Hull who married Zadock Stafford—they lived in Forsyth Co., NC near the line with Guilford Co. I believe, but do not have proof as yet, that he was the son of a John Hull who married a Perry—I believe John lived in Guilford Co., NC.

If I do not find them then I still will not throw them away. I have placed two Bibles in the past month to descendants of early 1800 ancestors who once owned them. I am sending you the Hull pages from a Bible that I placed with a family. The Hull pages were folded up in the Bible and we do not see how they are related to the original owners or their descendants. Please let me know what you find out about this family. I will also enclose some of my research in trying to locate heirs.

The first entry is Abraham Hull, born Jan. 21, 1817, married to Martha Whitfield Reynolds on 4th March 1841, died June 21st, 1884, aged 67 yrs & 5 months. Children were Mary Elizabeth Hull, John Emory Hull, Sarah Ann Hull, Ann Jane Hull, George Whitfield Hull, Alice Whitfield Hull, George Guiford Hull, Euler Lloyd Hull, Elmer Eugene Hull and Ernest Watt Hull. Also written on the page is a note “The names we go by now in the family”—Mary, Emory, Pennie, Alice, George, Lloyd, Eugene, Watt, Joe, Ben, Mason.

  • 20 Nov 2015 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: The given name of George Whitfield/Whitefield seems to appear in several Hull families in this country. The name may have been popular because of George Whitfield or Whitefield, an English Anglican cleric, who helped spread the Great Awakening in Britain and, especially, in the American colonies. We believe that your info is correct on your George Whitfield Hull and the info in Query #292 is for a different George Whitfield Hull.
  • 20 Nov 2015 Reply non-member Susan Baranoff: I have been looking for information on a George Whitfield Hull, b. 1854, Holmes County, Ohio, d. 1933, Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio. We have been immensely curious where the “Whitfield” came from in his name. George Whitfield’s parents were reported to be Joseph C. Hull, b. 1817 in PA, and Mary Adair, b. 1826 in MD.
The family I am researching has a long history of using their middle names as the “names they go by” right up through the current era—i.e., the father of my partner was John Robert Hull who was always called “Bob” by his family. I am hoping these papers will give us more information. If there is any connection to Pennsylvania or Ohio here we may be onto something. Abraham might have been a brother to Joseph Charles or we have misidentified the parents of our George Whitfield Hull.
Please assist as you can! Thank you!

Query #290 – Seeking more information on my gt grandfather, Alonzo Bemis Hull, of Bemis, Pennsylvania: I have traced my grandfather’s line back 17 generations, back to the Hull Colony. My great grandfather’s name was Alonzo Bemis Hull. A town was created in Bemis, PA around the burlap bag factory he owned there. I thought maybe what I have traced on my own might be an asset to your association.

My maiden name is Hull. I have two brothers that carry on the name. My father is still alive in Oregon. His name is Boyd Alonzo Hull. Just thought your website might provide me with more of my heritage.

Query #289 – Desire verification for Emma Hull m. Peter Ackerson; d/o John Hull and Margaret Lantz: I would like verification for Emma Hull, who married Peter Ackerson, that she is the daughter of John Hull and Margaret Lantz; and sister of Benjamin Hull and Nancy (Hull) Wood as listed in Charles Weygant’s The Hull Family in America genealogy, pub. 1913. Who were Margaret Lantz’s parents and what was the actual death date of John Hull? It’s not 1798, due to Emma and brother John H. Hull having been born in 1803 and 1805. Appreciate any and all help.

  • 28 Mar 2013 Reply from non-member Martha B. Foulke: John Hull and Margaret Lantz were married as per the History of Sussex and Warren Counties, New Jersey by Snell. John Hull’s death is mentioned in this book also as a suspicious death though he didn’t give a year— just that they removed to Shapanack, NJ in 1798. He very well may have died in 1798 as Charles Weygant indicated in The Hull Family in America.
I have found that my gg-grandmother Emma Hull Ackerson, born 1803 and married in New Jersey, is not the child of John Hull and Margaret Lantz. Nor is any child theirs listed as born after 1798–1800. I found their marriage recorded here under Sussex Co. Marriages from Docket of Daniel Predmore which is: Groom: Hull, John; Bride: Lance, Margit; Marriage date: 17 Nov 1785.
Then looking further to see if Margaret remarried after John died, I found in the same paper: Groom: Strudel, Peter; Jr. Bride: Lance, Margit; Marriage date: 21 Aug 1800.
I have verified that Margit Lance, Margaret Lantz, and Margaret Struble are all one and the same person.
I am still looking for the parents of Emma Hull, who was born in 1803, and married Peter Ackerson.

Query #288 – Photos of early Hull immigrants?: Are there any pictures of the early Hull immigrants, the ship they came on, their homes, churches, towns, lands, or places where they were? Specifically I am looking for these for Rev. Joseph Hull, or any of his ancestors, or the same images for the first or second generation of his descendants. I have seen some in the Hull Family Association Journal so I am wondering if there are any other than the ones in there, as I’ve already seen them. • 23 Mar 2012 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Kevin, photography had not yet been invented when the earliest immigrants came to this country, so, no, there are not early photos of any from the 1600s or 1700s, unless they would be paintings. I know of no early photographs for the Rev. Joseph Hull, his children, his grandchildren, and probably his gt grandchildren. However, we do have photos of his church in Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England.

I am trying to research Frank Hull who married Carrie Ann Pickens around 1865 in Otsego Co., NY. They lived in Westford, NY. They also had a child named Beulah Hull, born July 1890. I am seeking information on their marriage license to verify Carrie’s history. Pickens is her adopted name.

  • 04 Feb 2012 Reply from non-member Marguerite McCauley: If one of Frank Hull’s (of Westford) descendants was a daughter named Beulah (Hull) Aufmuth, then this is the same person. Carrie Laidler (Pickens, adopted name) was our great grandmother, and she was Beulah’s mother. If you have nothing on Frank Hull’s wife, then that doesn’t really help me. They were married by December, 1885 according to the Otsego Farmer. Divorced by 1892.
  • 20 Jan 2012 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: In our database, we have four Frank Hulls in Otsego Co., NY. One of these lived in Westford. We have no info on Frank’s wife.

Query #277 – Seeking Parents of Harvey Hull (1805–1882); Durham, Middlesex Co., CT: I am trying to find the parents of Harvey Hull (Aug. 7, 1805–Oct. 22, 1882). Most of his life was lived in Durham, Conn., but there is no mention of his birth in William Chauncey Fowler’s History of Durham, Connecticut… (Hartford: Wiley, Waterman & Eaton, 1866).

On June 28, 1841, he married Susan Cone (Dec 17, 1815–Aug 23, 1899). Some Account of the Cone Family in America… (Topeka, Kan.: Printed by Crane & Co., 1903) under the heading for Susan Cone (4430, p. 368). Harvey’s father is given as Eliakim Hull, but I have been unable to find anyone of that name whose dates would apply.

The old cemetery in Durham contains a headstone with the following inscription:

Revolutionary War
Eliakin [sic] Hull
Capt. Throops [sic] Co.
Died Oct. 30, 1811

Harvey and Susan’s children were Timothy Edgar Hull (1843–1904) and James Polk Hull (1847–1921).

I am descended from Timothy. James had no children.

  • 19 Jan 2012 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: We have the same info on Harvey Hull that you have. Regarding Eliakim Hull, Revolutionary War soldier, I have seven entries for an Eliakim Hull in my book Hulls in the American Revolution, pub. 1997, which I can send you by e-mail. This might help you to decide if Eliakim Hull is Harvey Hull’s father.
In my HFA database, I have 60 family group sheets for Hulls in Durham, Middlesex Co., CT. I can also send these to you by e-email.
I do not have a record that you have submitted a lineage to the HFA. We keep these lineages on file in order to co-ordinate all of our records. If you would still like to send a lineage, please go to the form here, which will send the lineage directly to me.
On the 1850 Durham, Middlesex Co., CT census, I am seeing several Hulls living fairly close to your Harvey Hull. Have you ever investigated any of these families in an attempt to tie them to Harvey?
One last suggestion: Submitting a DNA sample would help to narrow down which line you might descend from. I have 37 family group sheets from the George Hull, immigrant, line in my database. I have four family group sheets in Middlesex Co., CT, who descend from the Richard Hull, immigrant, line. I have five family group sheets in Middlesex Co., CT, who descend from the Rev. Joseph Hull, immigrant, line. In my database, I have 332 family group sheets for Hulls in Middlesex Co., CT.
I will also consult with “Saratoga” Bob Hull to see if he can place your Harvey Hull in any of the families in his database, as he specializes in New England Hulls.
