Query #369 – Henry Hull m. Mary King, 1833, of Van Buren Co., IA: I have been researching Henry Hull and Mary King who settled in Van Buren Co., Iowa before 1850. One of Henry and Mary’s children, Mary Angeline Hull, married William Hiram Whitcanack. One of William and Angeline Whitcanack’s children, Emaline (Emma) Whitcanack, married a Daniel L. Hull in Van Buren Co. Daniel L. Hull descends from John Hull and Margaret Black. John Hull was the son of Daniel L. Hull and Sophronia Brown.

I was unaware that there was a second Hull line living in Van Buren Co., IA before 1850. I have not spent much time with this second line so I do not have primary sources other than which I have listed below and records for those who descend through the Whitcanack family. I wonder if you know if these two lines are related, and if so, how.

• 05 Dec 2014 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: We have a partial line for the Henry Hull who married Mary King. They were also in Morris Co., NJ and Trumbull Co., OH.
     We also have Daniel L. Hull and Sophronia Brown in our database. He descends from the immigrant, George Hull, whom we are sure does not relate to the above Henry Hull. We need someone from the Henry Hull and Mary King line to submit their DNA. This would help to prove that these two lines are not related.

• 06 Nov 2014 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: I have that Irving Prescott Hull died 26 Sep 1928, when he resided in the Erie Co., NY County Home. Irving’s death certificate shows full name as Irving Hull. Irving was born April 27, 1850 in Boston, Mass. He resided at the time of his death, September 26, 1928, in the Erie County Home, State of New York. Cause of death was listed as general arteriosclerosis. An autopsy was performed. On October 2, 1928, Irving Hull’s ashes were removed to Cleveland, Ohio.

• 06 Nov 2014 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: There is conflicting information on the parents of William Lewis Hull. I don’t think we can accept that Lewis Hull and Martha Smith are the parents of William Lewis Hull until we document the marriage of William Lewis Hull and Emily Collins.
     I have the Lewis Hull who m. Martha Smith in my database, with a son William Lewis Hull, but I have that he m. Mary F. Bailey, 23 Mar 1854, Pike Co., IL. “Saratoga” Bob Hull has that William Lewis Hull m. Alice Bailey. Ancestry has that William Lewis Hull m. Emily Collins, but their sources seem to be other family trees, so that is suspect. We need to look for the location of the marriage of William Lewis Hull and Emily Collins in order to solve this problem.

• 06 Nov 2014 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Most of the real scholars on the line of George Hull do not believe that he was on the Mary and John, for several reasons, which I’ll try to list briefly below.
  1. There is no official passenger list for the Mary and John. Therefore, what you are seeing is a reconstructed listing or listings. There is some proof for at least one of the passengers, but, all in all, the others, except for this man who kept a Journal and mentioned a few others on the Mary and John, are people who have no real evidence for being listed.
  2. If all of the passengers listed on The Mary and John had been on that ship, the ship would have sunk. So again, people have been listed with no proper evidence for their listing.
  3. Robert Charles Anderson, who is one of the great authorities on the early great migrations, feels that George Hull did not come on the Mary and John. Please see: The Great Migration, Immigrants to New England, 1620–33,Vol. II, G–O, pp. 1041–1043, by Robert Charles Anderson, 1995 [George Hull is also mentioned in other volumes of this series].
  4. George Hull had a son, Joshua, bap 05 Nov 1630, back in Crewkerne, Somerset, England. Therefore, if George came in 1630, he came with no wife or other children, which is most unlikely.
  5. At The Mary & John Clearing House there is this: Passengers were listed in Roger Clapp’s memoirs and appear to have come in 1630. Some of the people he named came later. Passengers first appeared in New England in 1630, such as applying for freemanship on 19 Oct. 1630 or appearing on a jury, etc.; however, only a small percentage of the 1630 population can be found on such lists. George Hull did not become a freeman until March 1632/33.
  6. I am not seeing a website which says that it’s definite that George Hull came on the Mary and John. If you have seen such a site, please direct us to it.
  7. See The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Apr 1993, p. 158. This article comments on George Hull’s year of immigration, which remains unknown to us today. It says this: “None of [these men, including George Hull] should be on the Mary and John passenger list.”

  In the former days, much misinformation circulated about the early immigrants to this country. I, along with many others, feel that George Hull’s immigration date is unknown. We know, however, that he was here by 04 Mar 1632/33, when he became a freeman.

Therefore, she should appear in the 1850 census under her maiden name and perhaps in her parent’s family. The question is: would they have been living in New York City, where Comala Hull was born, or in Perth Amboy, NJ, where Comala Hull married?

   #1 marriage to Larkin Minchey, s/o Will & Sarah P. (Buckley) Minchey, bef. 23 Jun 1862. Date of first child, Parasetta Minchey. Other children: James W., George S., and Harmon Minchey. This family lived in Jackson Co., TN. Larkin C. Minchey was in the Civil War, Morgan’s Ky. Regt. Co. B, a POW, sent to Louisville, Ky., Baltimore, MD. Larkin Minchey died after 1870.
   Sarah Ann Hull married #2 Leonidas D. “Lon” Cassetty, s/o Sampson Alexander Cassetty and Martha Malinda Green, 24 Jul. 1875, Jackson Co., TN (Book A, pg 10, marriages). He was b. 03 Nov 1849; d. 22 May 1929, Jackson Co., TN. Sarah Ann Hull Cassetty and Leonidas D. “Lon” Cassetty were buried in the Minchey Cem., East Fork, Jackson Co., TN. Children: Thomas Alexander Cassetty 1876–1891, Charlie F. Cassetty, 1878–1944, Malinda Bell Cassetty, 1881–1898; all three are buried in Minchey Cem.

We have a man by that name in both Guadalupe and De Baca Counties, NM. This information is taken from the World War I enlistment and discharge papers for William Hull. However, this William Hull seems a little too young to have been the brother of your John Hull. He still could be a relative.

• 23 Jul 2013 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: According to the Hull Family Register [HFR], compiled by HFA member #0312 Dave Boatman, Margaret Jane had a son, Alexander Hull, before she was married. We have no knowledge at all about the King name. Alexander was fathered by William Bowers, prior to her marriage to Francis M. “Frank” Sanders, according to HFR. Jonathan Hull, Alexander’s grandfather, changed Alexander’s name to Hull and raised him.
     As for Indian blood in this family, we have no knowledge of that. However, this is a very common myth which circulates in many, many families, so we recommend that it not be taken too seriously, unless you can find solid documentation for it.
