Query #215 – Seeking info on murder of James H. Hull who m. Amanda Alice Spruce; Res.: Cedar Grove & East Bank, Kanawha Co., WV: I would like to find out if anyone knows the details of the murder of my GGF James H. Hull who lived in Cedar Grove, WV and East Bank, WV, Kanawha Co. The family story is this. He was at home with his wife, Amanda Alice Spruce Hull, and his daughter, Gladys Irene Hull. It was near the dinner hour when someone came to the home to tell him that a cow had been stolen and he set out to find out what the disturbance was and to retrieve the cow. He never returned home. He was found on the railroad tracks the next day.
On the 1905 Upper District Death Records, M. A. Morris Assessor, there is a James H. Hull and James Hull listed.
Name in Full | Race | Sex | DOD | POD | Cause | Age | OCC | Source |
James H. Hull | White | Male | 15 Sep 05 | Marmet | He was killed by Parties | 46 | Constable | F. or T. Beardsley, Coroner |
James Hull | White | Male | 15 Sep 05 | Marmet | C & O Train | 42 | Laborer | M. P. Malcolm, MD |
From our records, his birth date of 1866 would actually have made him closer to 40. Is this the same person who was examined by a MD and the coroner? Or, are these two different people with a strange coincidence?
Does anyone have any knowledge of this story and who the “parties” might have been?

Query #208 – Sussex Co., NJ Hulls: Judge Joseph Hull & his Son Sheriff Isaac Hull; Need Documentation: We are in the process of preparing an article to be published in a future HFA Journal discussing the generations of HFAm #186, Judge Joseph Hull who m. #1 Susanna Stelle, and #2 Phebe (?Hunt). We will be discussing the documentation for the children given by Orra Eugene Monnette, and published in The “Old Northwest” Genealogical Quarterly, Vol. 13, Oct 1910, pp. 139–175. Monnette then contributed his research to The Hull Family in America (HFAm), where much of this information was published in 1913.
Included in this article will also be a discussion of the children of HFAm #440 Sheriff Isaac Hull, who married Ann Dunham. Documentation for the children of both Judge Joseph Hull and Sheriff Isaac Hull, by Monnette and HFAm, seems to be lacking in several instances, which will be pointed out in the article.
If you have original records in Sussex Co., NJ, or any other area of NJ, to add to this article, please contact me. I’m especially interested in land, court, and probate records which will help to confirm many of these children. Some children are confirmed, but not all.
This is the Rev. Joseph Hull, immigrant, line.

Query #179 – Elijah Hull, b. ca. 1827, Madison Co., OH: This ancestor, Elijah Hull, has proved to be very elusive. He is the son of William Hull and Rachel Markley. In the censuses for 1850 and ’60, he is living in Sommerford, Madison, Ohio. On 22 Dec 1852, he married Elizabeth Maxwell in Clark County, OH. Elijah served in the Civil War in the 40th and 151st OVIs as a Private. On 01 Nov 1869, he received 160 acres in Lancaster, Nebraska per the Scripps Warrant Act of 1855. Two children were born to Elijah and Elizabeth: George V (ca. 1854) and William M. (ca. 1858). Both children were born in Ohio. The 1870 census places Elijah in Lancaster, NE. That’s where the trail ends, except; that he is buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Auglaize County, Ohio—I think. There is an Elijah Hull who died, 22 June 1871 and left a widow and six children. This Elijah has to be the son of Daniel Hull (1803–1869) and Mariah Smith, I think. There is another Elijah Hull buried in the same cemetery, but the name is spelled Elizah with a death date of 1877. Elijah’s sons, William M. and George V. must have returned to Ohio with their parents in the 1870s. In the 1880 census George V. is living with his brother, William M., and wife in Madison, Clark Co., Ohio. Later, George V. and wife are in Stokes, Logan Co., Ohio in the 1900 census. Help! Any suggestions or information to clear this up. To muddy the water further, I think that the Civil War marker is on the grave of the wrong person. Hope I’m wrong.
