Query #275 – Jesse Hull m. Rebecca (?Staley): Would like to know the parents of my 4th gt. grandparent, Jesse Hull, who m. Rebecca (perhaps Staley). Jesse was born 11 Sep 1773 in NJ.

— Submitted 22 Dec 2011 by Dana Balkum, HFA Member #1744

  • 22 Dec 2011 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Jesse Hull may have been born in 1771, according to the 1850 Overton Co., TN census. As far as we know, the names of the correct parents for Jesse Hull have never been found. A set of parents has been proposed, but they have been determined not to be correct. We also are not sure of Rebecca’s maiden name. The name Staley has been given but it is not thoroughly proven as yet.
We do have many connections for Jesse Hull to other Hulls in NC, TN, and KY. We suspect that one of those Hulls was the father of Jesse. We have an opinion as to who that father might be. We can discuss this theory with members of the HFA and we’d welcome having you as a member. We can send out our family group sheets, three at a time, by e-mail, to our HFA members.
We know other Hulls of his era who share a common ancestor (Josephus Hull, born 1772 father of Jonathan Hull; Daniel Hull, born ca 1797; Jesse Hull, born 1808; and David Hull, born ca. 1811). Because of the results of DNA testing, we also know that Jesse Hull does not descend from immigrant brothers George or the Rev. Joseph Hull of Crewkerne, England nor Richard Hull of early New Haven, CT, nor of the German immigrant Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull or other Germans (as well as other early Hulls who descendants have participated in DNA testing).
The Hull DNA Project is seeking descendants of Lewis C. Hull, son of Jesse and Rebecca Hull.

  • 16 Sep 2011 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: First, thank you very much for the family group sheets that you sent to us. That helps us to coordinate our research on your line. As to your Joseph Hull’s parents, the noted 1913 genealogy The Hull Family in America, gives his parents as John Hull and Susan Vaughn. This line goes back to the Rev. Joseph Hull, who came here in 1635. That is really all that we have to rely on about Joseph’s parents, and you are wise to try to prove this line, considering the number of errors in HFAm. I’m happy to send my family group sheets to you, three at a time, upon your request for these. They may give you info that you do not already have. We will also put you in touch with others from your line who may add to your data on these families. We have added a number of generations to your line, depending on whether or not HFAm is correct about your Joseph Hull’s parents names.

Query #265 – Burial place of George Hull, Fairfield, CT?: Is our “alpha Hull” George Hull buried in Fairfield CT? I am interested in making a pilgramage to see his grave.

— Submitted 30 Aug 2011 by non-member Jonathan W. Hull

  • 30 Aug 2011 Reply from “Saratoga” Bob Hull, HFA Member #0000: In short we know George Hull and his wife were buried in the Old Burying Ground in downtown Fairfield, CT because he was a member of the First Church and that’s where all of them were buried in the early days. However there is no documentary proof and the purist historians would not let us erect a monument to him in the Old Burying Ground.
Therefore we descendants put up a metal marker in front of his original home lot in downtown Fairfield across the street from the Fairfield Historical Society. Later generations descending from his son Cornelius were buried in the cemetery in Greenfield Hill. Find A Grave does a good job on them and their headstones.
If you are of the Clinton Hulls you probably descend from George’s son Josiah (Josias). They can be found with the help of the Hale, CT grave listings. Most would be in Killingworth rather than Clinton.
Let me know what else you want to know. But it’s all in the two books I’ve published. One is in the library in Clinton.

Query #264 – Seeking info on my living Hull relatives and Gt. Grandfather Orris T. Hull, b. ca. 1837, CT; m. Hannah Mariah Nelson: My main goal is to find living relatives as, because of a traumatic divorce situation in the 1950s, my mother cut off contact with Hull relatives. My brother, David Nelson Hull, and I have lived in Tempe, Maricopa Co., AZ since 1959–60, but don’t know anyone to ask about my father Charles Elton Hull’s relatives in Barnum, Hull and Nelson lines. Charles Elton Hull was b. 14 Dec 1907, Waterbury, New Haven Co., CT.
Goal #2 is to find out more details about my great grandparents, Orris T. Hull and Hannah Mariah Nelson.

  • 30 Aug 2011 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: This is one of our success stories. “Saratoga” Bob Hull, a member of our Genealogy Committee, has compiled an Ahnentafel on your Hull line. He can carry your line back to Richard Hull, the 1630s immigrant, of New Haven Co., CT. I believe you have already received this information. I hope that someone can perhaps give you more info on your gt grandparents and your other lines, as well as your more recent Hull relatives.

I cannot trace forward from George Hull III, who most online trees list as his father, nor can I trace back from Henry.

— Submitted 29 Aug 2011 by Neil Alan Hull, HFA Member #1726

  • 29 Aug 2011 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: We do not believe that the genealogy Some Descendents of John Hull, published by Thomas F. Hull, 114 Pathway Lane, West Lafayette, IN 47906-2156, is correct in naming John and Rebecca Hull as the parents of this Henry Hull. We are familiar with the latter family, and their son, Henry Hull, is a different man than the Henry who m. Catherine Snider/Snyder.
Unfortunately, we do not have solid proof for the parents of the latter Henry Hull. It has been suggested that a George Hull might be the father of Henry Hull, but this still needs much more work and documentation. I have prepared a chronology on this George Hull, which I am hoping to glean more info on in order to prove the parentage of your Henry Hull.

  • 28 Aug 2011 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: I will send you my family group sheet for the Benjamin Hull you mention above. Many people have tried to link this Benjamin Hull to the NJ Hulls and no one yet, to my knowledge, has found the proper link. However, DNA testing has shown they connect to the Crewkerne, England Hulls, and the Rev. Joseph Hull, immigrant, from this line had three sons who went to Middlesex Co., NJ. Still no proof for how Benjamin Hull descends from one of these three sons.

It was in my parents’ trunk. No one knows where he fits in our family. From the searching that I’ve done he may have married a Whitmore. My Whitmore lived in Kendall Co., IL in the 1850–1860s.

Query #256 – Henry Hulls of Greenup Co., KY: My Hulls were in Greenup Co., KY in the 1840s, and many of the children of John and Rebecca [_?_] Hull were married there.

A Henry B. Hull was also married there on 6 April 1841 to Mary Ann Crawford. The HFA Genealogist, Phyllis J. Hughes, told me at the time I was researching the Hulls there that the latter Henry B. Hull was not one of my relatives, but rather was Henry Blake Hull.

I put the information I had gathered about Henry Blake Hull on my website (why waste the research?), but apparently I have confused two Henrys who married two Mary Anns. I recently received a comment to my site, identifying one of the Henrys as a Henry who married Mary Ann Branson in Osage, MO on 2 Feb 1843.

I am not clear on the ethics of using information I get here to answer questions addressed to my website, but I would appreciate it if someone could clear up my confusion—and then at least I will not be adding to the incorrect info floating around in cyberspace. By the way—the page in question is here.

Thank you so much.

  • 04 Aug 2011 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: I have since confirmed that the above two Henry Hulls were not the same person and that neither were they the Henry Hull, who was the son of John and Rebecca [_?_] Hull of Greenup Co., KY, the family from whom you descend through Charlotte, their daughter.
The latter Henry was John Henry Hull, who moved to Warrick Co., IN. He was b. 03 May 1818, Greenup Co., KY; d. 31 Jul 1906; bur. Hull Cem., Warrick Co., IN; m. (1) Mary Agnes or Agnus Phillips, 02 or 21 Apr 1840, Warrick Co., IN; (2) Sarah Hoskins, 27 Nov 1898, Warrick Co., IN.
The Henry Hull who married Mary Ann Branson, to my knowledge, was never in KY. He may have been in PA or TN, but was married in Osage Co., MO and also lived in St. Louis, Mo.

  • 11 Jul 2011 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Thank you for your query. We can assure you that Cordell Hull was not your great grandfather. He had no children. Many people assume that they are related to Cordell Hull, largely because he was a famous man or their relatives have told them of such a relationship. Most of the time, upon further tracing of one’s Hull family, there is no relationship at all to Cordell Hull.  Query #250 – John Hull, b. 1791, m. Amy Strickland: I am seeking information as to who John Hull, b. 1791, and Amy Strickland’s parents are. I believe from what I have read on the Internet that Philip Hull and Elizabeth Barbara Lingenfelter are John Hull’s parents and that John Strickland may be the father of Amy. It also seems that Philip had a brother named John Hull who married Barbara Lingenfelter’s sister. I’m seeking for some kind of proof. And is Johann Abraham Holl the father of Philip or just Abraham Holl, b. May 20,1714, in Palatinate?

Unfortunately the Hull names that we have associated with this company are much older people than your father. If you have your Hull grandparents’ or great grandparents’ names, that would help a lot to trace these people back further and make a connection with those in our database.
I believe we have found your parents in the Social Security records and possibly, too, a partial obituary for your father’s mother. Did all of these people eventually go to Florida?

Query #245 – Seeking parents of James Hull Kidd, b. 1869: I am revising my Query #243. I am searching for any information that might lead me to the parents of “James Hull Kidd,” b. 18 Dec 1869. Birth place unknown. Because the name “Hull” is used as the middle name, we can only suspect that this might have been the surname of the blood father of “James Hull Kidd.” “Kidd” is the adopted name of James Hull Kidd.

This is a stretch, but could be relevant. In 1874 at Cleveland/Independence, Cuyahoga Co., OH, Elijah Fulton Kidd adopted “James Hull Kidd” and at that time, as we know it, Elijah F. Kidd was referred to as “uncle.” Enter Emma J. Hackett of Cold Spring, Jefferson Co., Wisconsin, half-sister to Elijah Fulton Kidd. In 1874 Emma J. Hackett married Lorenzo Brown of Reedsburg/Baraboo, Sauk Co., WI. Did she have a child she had to give up in order to marry Lorenzo Brown? Was there a Hull involved in the equation?

Query #236 – Florence Hull, d/o Moses Hull (1836–1907), Adventist/Spiritualist: Has anyone worked up biographical information on Florence Hull, the daughter of Moses Hull (1836–1907), the Adventist/spiritualist reformer? I note that there have been three articles on Moses and family in the HFA Journal: Vol 16, #3 (Autumn 2006); Vol. 14, #1 (Spring 2003); Vol. 13, #1 (Spring 2002). Florence Hull figures significantly in a project I’m researching on the links between spiritualism and feminism in 19th century America.

Below is what I have pieced together thus far, though some of my sources are contradictory and perhaps more anecdotal than documentary. Can you point me toward more information on Florence Hull, or refer me to someone who might have researched her?

  • Florence Hull [AKA: Mary Florence Johnson, Alfaretta Jahnke (?), Mrs. Niver (of the Morris Pratt School)]

  • Father: Moses Hull
  • Mother: probably Elvira Lightner, rather than Mattie E. Sawyer
  • Siblings: Cynthia, Olive, Alfaretta (Florence the youngest?)
  • Companion: Horace Johnson

Query #235 – Henry M. Hull from Ireland to Jefferson and Morgan Cos., OH; m. Viley Dew: Looking for more information on Henry McCargor(?) Hull’s Irish roots, as well as any immigration/naturalization records if known. Family lore has Henry and a brother Robert arriving alone in New Orleans in 1822. I am highly skeptical about this as he would have only been about 14 and Robert about 9 years old. I would assume if this arrival date and port of entry is correct, that they would have been traveling under someone’s care. And what reason for these 2 lads to emigrate to the United States alone? Thanks for any light you might shed on this subject.

Query #229 – Looking for info on Henry and wife Maria Prentice of Oswego Co., NY: I am looking for information on Henry Hull and Maria Prentice. I have been unable to locate any parents or siblings of either. They are my 3g grandparents.

Henry Hull and Maria Prentice first showed up in the 1850 census with 7 of their 11 children. They lived in South Granby, Oswego, NY in 1850 to 1870. He was born between 1800 and 1808 in either NY or Maine depending on which census you believe. He was single and living in Oswego county NY in 1878.

Maria Prentice was born in NY, in Nov 1813 or 1815, and is buried in Chase Cemetery, Lysander, Onondaga Co., NY. She lived with her children or by herself after the 1850 census. She died in Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY around 1910. The Chase Cemetery in Onondaga Co. is right next to South Granby, Oswego Co. So they may have lived in either county, or anyplace else, before 1850. I have been unable to locate them before 1850 or any parents or siblings of either one.

Any help would be appreciated.
