Query #112 – Isaac Hull–Lancaster Co., PA & Butler Co., OH–Jacob W. Hull–John Samuel Hull–Bertram Clarence Hull–Ruth Blanch Hull–Locations: VA, IL, KS, NE: I seek information on the Isaac Hull, born 1760, PA, who ended up in Butler Co., OH. His probable son was Jacob W. Hull, b. 06 Sep 1816, VA. I have been told that DNA testing has been done and descendants of Jacob W. Hull don’t match descendants of Isaac Hull from Butler Co., OH.

I don’t believe there is any connection to my Hull line and the brothers that came from England (e.g, Rev. Joseph Hull & George Hull, of Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England).

I have no proof or documentation on Jacob W. and this Isaac Hull line. I need a connection. There has been speculation that the ancestry is German rather than English. I was told in 19th century Virginia that it seems to be common for people with the surname Hull to have had German ancestry with the original spelling Hohl. Help!!

• 24 Mar 2010 Reply from Carol Ann Timma Hull, HFA Member #1558: Isaac Hull (1760–1833) is the 3rd great grandfather of my husband, who descends from Abraham Johnson Hull, the third child of Isaac and Susan Hull. Abraham is the brother of Jacob W. Hull who was born in PA, not VA, on 6 Sep 1816. The error is, I believe, in the handwriting. With the help of James R. Hull, a trip to Butler Co., OH, and the census, I have been able to trace the children of Isaac, including your Jacob W. Hull with some amount of sureness. Do contact me for details.

• 24 Jun 2010 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Thank you so much for your response. Probable descendants of Isaac Hull, who served in the Revolutionary War, tell me that none of Isaac Hull’s children are absolutely proved. This includes information from the late James Reynolds Hull. Lists have been drawn up for Isaac’s probable children but thus far no original record has surfaced to verify the children. We have a number of HFA members who have studied this line for many years and we have multiple records on the probable descendants.
     One of our members, a long-time, excellent researcher on this line, states that four census records (1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880) show VA as the place of birth of Jacob W. Hull; she sees no problem in interpreting the handwriting with the possible exception of the 1850 census.
     In fact, she states that in the 1870 and 1880 census “Virginia” is written out in full. She does not totally eliminate the possibility of PA or OH as the birthplace of Jacob W. Hull, but concludes that these four census records supporting VA are better evidence than the evidence found for either PA or OH. We have a complete copy of Isaac Hull’s Revolutionary War pension record in our files, which does an excellent job of tracing his movements. This line has been DNA-tested.

 Query #111 – Julia Ann Hull m. Jeremiah Kittle Jr.–Delaware Co., NY–Ogle Co., IL: My 3rd great grandfather was Jeremiah Kittle Jr. He was born and died in Delaware Co., NY. He married Julia Ann. The only clue we have as to her maiden name was that given by her oldest daughter in the 1925 IA Census. She said the maiden name was Julia Ann Hull.

We know that they were married sometime prior to the 1850 census for Middletown, Delaware Co., NY, when they are listed with their first child, Mary, born in Aug. 1850. We know that there were several Hull families in Middletown, Delaware Co., New York but have not been able to find information tying Julia Ann to them. Would Julia Ann show up on your records as part of any Hull family in Delaware Co., NY? She was born according to census records about 1820 in NY. She died in Ogle Co., IL, in 1861. Thank you for any help you could provide.

 Query #108 – Hezekiah Hull & Charity Schram–Canada, Arenac Co., MI–James Hull & Jennett Stevens–NJ & Canada: A few years ago, I had traced my Hull line to my 2nd gt. grandfather, Hezekiah Hull, b. ca. 1815, Canada, m. Charity Schram (b. ca. 1824, d/o Jacob & Catherine Schramm).

I now know Hezekiah died in Arenac Co., MI, between May, 1898 and the 1900 census. On his second marriage at age 83 in 1898, Arenac Co., MI, to Elizabeth Birtch, he lists his parents as James Hull and Jennett Stevens. The 1851 Canadian census shows that James Hull was living alone in the Canadian Niagara area, b. ca. 1789, NJ. Does this connect to any family information of the HFA or are there suggestions from members?

 Query #107 – Edward Franklin Hull & Mattie Lou Maddox–Clay Co., AL; Reuben Thornton Hull & Mary Dandridge Reagan or Ragan Hull–Putnam Co., GA: I would like help identifying people in old photos. I am trying to locate descendants of my great aunt, Mattie Lou Maddox, b. 1884, who m. 1918, Edward Franklin Hull, who d. 1943. They were listed in the 1930 Clay Co., AL census, but later Mattie lived in Birmingham, AL, where she was a nurse.

I don’t know the names of Edward Franklin Hull’s parents. They had a daughter, Doris Frances Hull, b. 1919, m. 1937, J. D. Burckhardt, Jr. (possibly Burkhalter), who had two sons, Franklin Dewitt Burckhardt, b. 1938, and Milford Hull Burckhardt, b. 1941.

Edward Franklin Hull and Mattie Maddox Hull also had a son, Edward Hull Jr., b. 1923, who m. Bella Phillips, 1942. Edward Hull Jr. had a daughter, Dawn Hull.

Mattie Maddox Hull’s grandparents were Reuben Thornton Hull, b. 1816, Putnam Co., GA; d. 1902, and Mary Dandridge Reagan/Ragan Hull. If there is anyone willing to help, I will be most appreciative.

 Query #106 – Hulls in Milton, Rock Co., WI–Orphan Train Hull: My name is Lisa Hull and I am developing an interest in the genealogy of the Hull side of my family. Unfortunately, my grandmother, rest her soul, could tell us little about her side of the family, as she arrived in Wisconsin via the Orphan Trains. 

However, the Hull family I am interested in finding more about lived in Milton, Rock Co., WI. I have looked through your web site—good Lord, people with the last name Hull must be related to nearly everybody in the country!

I don’t know quite where to start tracing our ancestors back. Would you be able to point me in the right direction? If I knew the information exists somewhere I would be happy to pay a membership fee in order to access this information. For some reason, I think our line might go back to Richard Hull from England. He was b. ca. 1785 and he married Johannah (maiden name unknown). They lived in Depford, London, England, and had children: Thomas William (m. #1 Harriet Rebecca Pettigrew, #2 Mary Ann Cobb), George Henry, and Joseph Benjamin Hull. My family later emigrated to Norwich, co. Norfolk, England; co. Middlesex, England; Victoria & Grand Folks, British Columbia, Canada.

I have had DNA analysis and I match the Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England Hulls. Any help here would be most appreciated.

• 29 Aug 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: This is the very first instance in which we have evidence of a descendant of the Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England, Hulls having no history of descendants living in our country. Did one of the descendants here go back to England and then emigrate to Canada? Or was an earlier ancestral line related to the Crewkerne Hulls and is it a line whom we know nothing about? We’d certainly like to uncover that if this did happen.
     The two earliest immigrants here from the Crewkerne Hulls were George Hull and the Rev. Joseph Hull, both sons of Thomas Hull, “the Younger.” They both came here in the mid 1630s. So, naturally, we have an abundance of material on their descendants.
     It might be that a son of George and Joseph Hull’s grandfather, Richard Hull, is your ancestor. This will all take some research to uncover. This Richard Hull did have other sons. They were: William, Thomas, “the Elder,” Reynold, and John. We do have some records on these men, which I will investigate.
     Thomas “the Younger” had no sons, except for George and the Rev. Joseph Hull, who had children likely to have had descendants from whom you could descend, but I will also investigate that. So your ancestor is more apt to be Richard Hull, b. ca. 1515, the earliest Hull of whom we have evidence who lived in Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England.

John’s son, Gersham Winfield Hull, b. 1840, m. Mary Newell. Gersham W. Hull died while on a trip to Skagit Co., WA. He was a Civil War Veteran and fought for the North.

I have submitted my DNA for analysis and my test matches the group in Lineage #6 at the Hull Genetic Genealogy Project.

• 13 Sep 2008 Reply from Mrs. Phillip Hull, HFA Member #1346: I have been following my husband’s family also; his 2nd great grandfather was Ezekiel A. Hull, born in New Jersey to father Joseph and mother Minerva on 14 Feb, 1809 and died in Dimondale, Michigan, 16 Sept 1890. Dimondale is just south of Lansing, Michigan, our capital. I could not find anything on his father Joseph or Minerva in New Jersey and have not searched lately. Ezekiel migrated to New York, then Ohio and Michigan. I have found the graves of Ezekiel, his wife, children and grandchildren. I am interested in finding out what Hull lineage you are, I guess we are part of the Hull lineage which the Hull Association hasn’t been able to connect yet. Good luck in your search.

• 31 Dec 2008 Reply from Thomas Hull, non-member: I am the great, great, great, great grandson of Samuel Hull Jr. and his wife Sabrina Teall, and the great, great, great grandson of Henry Hubbard Hull and his wife Caroline Amelia Brewster. Henry Hull was a native of Tioga County, New York, and later moved to Marquette County, Wisconsin, where he lived the remainder of his life.
     Mr. Gilbert Vaughan Hull and I share a common ancestor. Our most recent common ancestor is Henry Hubbard Hull (1822–1911). Based on the information I have Mr. Hull must be descended from either Walter Brewster Hull or Charles Hull (both sons of Henry Hubbard and Caroline Hull). I am descended from Walter and Charles’s brother Nathan.
     In Mr. Hull’s query he requested any information about Samuel Jr. and Henry Hubbard Hull. I have pictures of Samuel, Henry, and Caroline; death certificates and obituaries for Henry and Caroline; headstone pictures from the cemetery; census records; pictures of Henry and Caroline’s home (both old and recent); and copies of select pages of the register from the Presbyterian Chruch where Henry and Caroline attended. I have learned over the years that sharing information and materials has been very helpful in research, and I believe that the aforementioned documents and pictures may be of interest to Mr. Hull. I understand that some DNA evidence suggests that there is no genetic link between the Samuel Hull family of Piscataway NJ, ca. 1750, and Moses Hull of Anson County NC, ca. 1775.

If this is correct? Can someone assist me in establishing the origins of the first Moses Hulls of Anson, Rowan and Wilkes Counties, North Carolina and from where, if at all, they migrated from the New England area?

• 11 Aug 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Yours is a commonly asked question. One of the old errors in the 1913 genealogy The Hull Family in America is that Samuel Hull was the son of Daniel Hull and Mary Quincy. Actually Mary’s name was Quinney and not Quincy. However, the wrong parents were given for this Samuel Hull in this genealogy, as proven by the Quaker records for Daniel Hull and Mary Quinney.
     For more info on who the parents of Samuel Hull might have been, you should order these HFA Journals: Vol. 17, Nos. 1 & 2.
     Samuel Hull was not born in Clarksburg, Harrison Co., WV. It is more likely that he was b. in NJ where he was married in 1758 in Morris Co., NJ, but evidence of his birth, too, has not yet been found, despite many years of searching for this. He did not go to Harrison Co., VA (now WV) until about 30 years later. He is buried in Licking Co., OH, on the farm of his son William Hull in Hopewell Twp. We have no evidence other than this as to where he actually died.
     We have a great many HFA members who descend from Samuel Hull and Martha Glover, including the HFA Genealogist, who has multiple files on this couple and their descendants.

Theodore Hull is my 3rd gt. grandfather and I have been searching for a male (Y chromosome) descendant of Theodore for many years. Theodore had three sons. Sons Samuel and Daniel both died in the Civil War. My 2nd gt. grandfather, Sgt. Reuben E. Hull, survived the war but had no male children, by his wife Ellen E. Griffith. His daughter, Emma Adell Hull, was my gt. grandmother. Samuel Hull died in 1863 without offspring.

However, Theodore’s oldest son, Daniel, who died in 1864, and his wife Hulda Rardin, did have one son, John Theodore Hull, who was born in Washington County, Ohio in 1859. He married Virginia “Jennie” May Carroll, and died in Sedro-Woolley, Skagit County, Washington in 1915. John Theodore Hull had one son, named Daniel L. Hull, born in Washington in 1905, who passed away in Seattle in 1960. His death record lists him as Dan Louie Hull Sr. which would imply that he had a son.

If we can find a male Hull descended from Theodore Hull, and more specifically from Daniel Louie Hull Sr., we will be able to determine, once and for all, if our Hull line is descended, as rumored, from the Rev. Joseph Hull of Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England who arrived in Massachusetts in 1635.

There would not be a photograph, because photography had not yet been developed when Peter Hull died ca. 1817—1818. There could well have been a portrait, but, if so, I’ve never heard of it. She was born 04 Oct 1640, in Guilford, CT, and died 31 Jan 1689, Guilford, CT. They had 2 children: sons John and Samuel. Nicholas Munger died 16 Oct 1668, Guilford, CT, and Sarah married second Dennis Crampton about 1669.

Some sources list Sarah as Sarah Hall, dau/o William and Esther Hall of Guilford, CT, and some sources list Sarah as Sarah Hull, dau/o of Andrew and Catherine (Cook) Hull of New Haven, CT. I can’t figure out if she belongs to either of them. Do you know if Sarah is a Hull? Thanks.

 Query #080 – Birth Mother Cynthia Hull–Clinton, Clinton Co., IA: I am searching for a Cynthia Hull who would have been in the Clinton, Iowa area in June 1963. She is my birth mother. There is no other information in the court files other than her name. There is no birth father’s name listed either. On the adoption petition Cynthia asserted that the name and whereabouts of the birth father were unknown. I do not know if she was single or married at the time. I do not know how old she was either. Cynthia had me at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, Iowa on June 27, 1963. The doctor was Dr. Don F. Mirick. My adoptive parents told me that my birth mother was a paraplegic from polio and in a wheelchair. I cannot prove this but it is what I was told. My adoptive mom was a nurse at the same hospital and also worked with Dr. Mirick. My adoptive mother died January 1992, so I can’t ask any other questions.

If there is anything anyone can do for me to help me try to find Cynthia Hull I will appreciate it greatly. Thank you.

• Ref.: 1850 Census, Allegheny Twp., Blair Co., PA: James, 39, with his wife Christina 27, Mary J., 1 (daughter), Elizabeth, 59 (his mother?), Mary Hallet, 34 (his sister?), and Abraham Fetters, 56.

Others who appear in Antis, Blair Co., PA are Andrew Hull, 69, b. MD, Rachel, 55, b. MD, David Hull, 40, b. PA, Margaretta 37, b. PA.

• Ref.: Family of Abraham Fetters (from Robert Fetters), Huntingdon Co., PA. Court Records 1828: David Hull gave oath of testimony about estate of Jacob Fetters, decd. May 20, 1833 Court Records: deed for Abraham Fetters, son of Jacob Fetters. James Hull witnessed claims.
• Ref.: Blair Co., PA Tax list: James Hull in Logan Twp. 1850–1856. In 1852 David Hull appears in the same Logan Twp. records; in 1856 James’s name is crossed out and David is written over it. David continues to appear until 1858 when his name is crossed out.

If Elizabeth is James Hull’s mother and she was born in MD, and Andrew and Rachel were born in MD, this may lead to some connection to James and Elizabeth. Both David Hull and James Hull testify for Abraham Fetters about land and his deceased father, Jacob Fetters. This shows that both David and James were close to the Fetters. James’s name being crossed out in the tax records and David’s name replacing it, shows another possible connection between James and David. When James moves to Illinois in ~1856, this is when David’s name replaces James.

• 1860 Stephenson Co., IL Census: James, his wife Christina, and his first 2 children who were born in PA. ~1853, Matilda and 1855 William A., and an additional daughter Amanda, 2, are included in the census.
• 1860 Freeport, Stephenson Co., IL Census shows Elizabeth Hull, b. MD, along with Rachel Hull, 30, b. OH, Josephine, 14, b. OH, and George, 40, b. OH. Elizabeth living with other Hulls who were born in OH shows the great possibility of connection to the Hulls of OH. I am not aware of any connection yet.
• 1865 Stephenson Co., IL State Census places James and Christina and children in Harlem Twp.
• 1865 Stephenson Co., IL State Census places Elizabeth with 4 males in the City of Freeport, IL.

James and Christina are both buried in Stephenson Co., IL in Grandview Cemetery. Elizabeth Hull, widow, and Rachel Hull sell lot in Freeport, IL, October 1866 (Ref.: Stephenson Co. Deed book #45). Elizabeth does not show up in any of the censuses after the sale of the lots. I have no record of her death either.

 Query #078 – Daniel Hull & Wife Elizabeth [_?_]–Son Elijah Charles Hull–Greene & Morgan Cos., IL: Some sites have listed Daniel Hull as being the son of Joseph and Keziah Christie Hull. I do not believe this is my Daniel, who was b. ca. 1797 in NC but was living in IL during the 1850 census. Would like to find out for sure who my Daniel is actually related to.

• 14 Feb 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Regarding Joseph Hull and Keziah Christie Hull, they apparently did have a son named Daniel Chrystie Hull but he is a different man than your Daniel, so you are correct that your Daniel is not the son of Joseph Hull and Keziah Christie. This Joseph also had a son named Elijah Chrystie Hull, but he was b. 03 Feb 1800 and would not be your Elijah Charles Hull, b. 15 Jan 1820, who was the son of your Daniel and Elizabeth Hull.
     So you are correct that these websites contain the wrong information. Two different Daniel Hulls and two different Elijah C. Hulls have been confused here. Tentatively, your Daniel Hull is listed as the son of Moses and Elizabeth Hull, but people are still working to try to confirm this.

• 18 Jan 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: This is one of the problem Hull lines in NJ and also in KY. The Isaac Hull, who m. Mercy or Massie Vaughn, is given as the son of Sheriff Isaac Hull, b. 1731, and Anne Dunham in The Hull Family in America [HFAm], pub. 1913. However, the younger Isaac Hull’s Rev. War pension states that he was b. in 1740 in Middlesex Co., NJ, which if true, makes it impossible for him to have been the son of Sheriff Isaac Hull, b. 1731. If the younger Isaac Hull were b. in 1740 and the older Isaac in 1731, then we have to look elsewhere for this Isaac Hull’s parents. I would begin by looking at all of the “Dangling NJ Hull lines” that we published several years ago in our HFA Journal. These were lines that were not carried down in HFAm; this Journal is still available to our HFA members.

Catherine “Caty” Snider/Snyder. I have not been able to confirm this. My source is from a paper, Some Descendents [sic] of John Hull, published by Thomas F. Hull, 114 Pathway Lane, West Lafayette, IN 47906-2156. I am pretty new at this and appreciate everyone’s help trying to unravel my family history.

We know that it does contain some serious errors. We also have extensive records on your ancestor, Henry Hull. We do not have any documentation, however, that his middle name was Harrison and we believe this to be incorrect.
     The HFA Journal, Vol. 14, #3 has a featured article on your family, entitled “The Henry Hull and Catherine Snider Family of Pennsylvania, Trumbull and Wayne Counties, Ohio, Descendants to Lorain and Geauga County, Ohio,” along with their bible record. These Journals are still available to our HFA members.
  We believe that the above genealogy has erred in naming the John who married Rebecca as the father of your Henry Hull. He was the father of a Henry Hull, but this Henry is a entirely different man than yours.
     I have sent you our family group sheets for both this John Hull, who married Rebecca, and his son Henry Hull, who married Christina Cox. I have also sent our family group sheet for your Henry Hull, who married Catherine “Caty” Snider/Snyder and you will see from these family group sheets that these two Henrys were two different men. John Hull’s son instead is the Henry Hull who married Christina Cox; he had a different birth date than your Henry and a different set of children. It is not yet proven that this John Hull came from Ireland. He may connect to some Irish Hulls, as the DNA analysis indicates, but we do not know that this John was the immigrant of the family.
     We have made very thorough studies of the Hulls in Washington Co., PA. There were at least 25 branches there that we cannot say relate to each other. We cannot even confirm that your Henry Hull was in Washington Co., PA, although we do believe he probably went to OH from PA. We have had the benefit of the excellent research done by our own HFA members who descend from these lines. They are first-rate and experienced genealogists, who really have cared about documenting and verifying their information. Therefore, we believe that we have the correct data regarding these two Henry Hulls. Thank you for your query. We are pleased to help with these confusing Henry Hull lines.

No doubt you are referring to the Henry/Heinrich Hull/Holl who was b. 01 Apr 1760, commonly given to the 1741 German immigrant, Peter Thomas Hohl/Holl. However, this parentage is definitely incorrect, as proven by land records and DNA testing. Peter Thomas Hohl/Holl was not the father of Henry Hull. This is one of the most misunderstood lines out on the Internet today.
